We need to know the piping diagrams (where they will connect the CO2 pump) and min. and max. capacities in variable evaporating temperatures to design the unit.
ANSWER: a cascade system with two compressors does not pass the cut of the critical requirements: mass and dimensions
A possible option that can be considered would two stages but single compressor.
As far as concerning the question on the piping diagram , the temperature range of the CO2 would be +10,-40C, the minimum refrigeration capacity at -40C shall be 4kW
The Carbon dioxide is entering the condenser at 50% vapor quality and needs to be fully condensed with -3 degC subcooling

SLAC is the process to build a refrigeration system to condense Carbon Dioxide by mean of a standard vapor compression refrigeration unit, working with any refrigerants approved by California Laws, ideally R448a
The evaporator running with R448a or similar, must be a plate heat exchanger, condensing on the counter flowing side, a maximum flow of 30 g/s Carbon dioxide entering at .5 vapor quality. Because of the CO2, the pressures rating of the plate heat exchanger must 73 bar

Hello,
SLAC National Accelerator Laboratory has a requirement for the following item(s) listed below.
1.) CO2 condensing unit = Qty 1
Specifications:
SLAC is in the process of building a prototype CO2 cooling plant. This CO2 cooling plant is to provide CO2 at subcooled state with CO2 flow rate ranging from 5 g/s to 30 g/s and temperature ranging from 10 C to -30 C.
This CO2 condensing unit is to condense, cool down and maintain the CO2 flow at subcooled state. It utilizes a vapor refrigeration circuit to generate the cooling. The refrigerant should have an ASHRAE refrigeration classification of A1 (low toxicity and nonflammability) and is not listed at the Section 95374 - List of Prohibited Substances in CA.
The power supply of the condensing unit is 460v/3ph/60hz.
The condenser of the refrigeration circuit should be water cooled with cooling water inlet temperature at 17 C (63 F).
The condensing unit should use expansion valve with adjustable cooling temperature and cooling capacity. The use of cylinder unloader and/or VFD to adjust the cooling capacity is recommended.
When at full capacity, the condensing unit should give a cooling capacity of 4000 W with evaporator temperature at -40 C.
The system weight should be less than 1200 lbs.
The condensing unit should contain a CO2 condenser to condense and maintain CO2 fluid at the subcooled state. It should have a MAWP of 80 bar.
Once the CO2 condensing unit deliver, the integration with the CO2 circuit (the CO2 pump, accumulator, flowmeter, and plumbing) will take place. The CO2 fluid and the CO2 pump is provided by SLAC. SLAC will take the ownership of integration of the CO2 condensing unit with the CO2 circuit at SLAC
